Phycom is a Dutch company specializing in algae cultivation optimization services and high-quality microalgae ingredients for food and feed industries.

The company has developed a modular system for mass cultivation of algae, which it claims lowers the high costs traditionally associated with microalgae production. According to the company, its fully closed technology can cultivate multiple species simultaneously under controlled conditions and ensures continued year-round output with minimal environmental impact.

Phycom’s algae for meat alternatives range includes four varieties (Chlorella sorokiniana, Chlorella vulgaris, Golden Chlorella, and Parachl. kessleri Sol), all of which contain fatty acids, fibre, and protein.

In September 2023, Phycom was engaged in a Dutch Government-funded project in collaboration with Revyve, Unilever, Westland Kaas, PeelPioneers, and Wageningen University and Research. This project conducted studies on the functionality of microbial proteins, their market potential, and applications.

Funding and financials

In September 2023 , the company secured a EUR 9 million (~USD 9.7 million) investment from Corbion, Phase2.earth, Invest-NL, and Invest International, alongside existing shareholders. The funds were earmarked for scaling up production, enhancing technology, expanding marketing efforts, and appointing new board members.
