Equip Health

California-based Equip Health is a digital eating disorder treatment provider that began its operations with a focus on individuals aged 6 to 24. Equip uses a family-based treatment approach by providing patients and their families a dedicated five-person care team; a therapist, dietitian, physician, peer mentor, and family mentor. Sessions can be booked according to a family’s schedule and need instead of sending the patient away to a residential treatment facility. 

The company has also established partnerships with insurance players that consider Equip’s business model to be a low-cost alternative to in-person residential treatment,  which includes food and lodging costing USD 45,000 per month. It has collaborations with insurance providers, such as Optum, and is working to secure contracts with Medicaid plans. As of February 2022, the product was available in 40 states and the firm had partnered with 10 major insurance providers including Medicaid.

In September 2023, the company announced the extension of its services to adults. The new program for adults had contracts with more than 15 health plans, including national payers and Medicaid plans. The company plans to use a different approach to treating adults, relying on cognitive behavior-enhanced (CBT-E) therapy while also including loved ones in therapy.

Funding and Financials

In September 2023, Equip raised ~USD 20 million in funding, led by General Catalyst. The funds were allocated towards extending its virtual eating disorder therapy program to include adults.
