Atarraya is a technology company that has developed an innovative solution for sustainable shrimp farming called Shrimpbox. Founded by Daniel Russek, Atarraya aims to revolutionize shrimp production by enabling local, environmentally friendly cultivation anywhere in the world. The company's flagship product, Shrimpbox, is a 40-foot shipping container converted into an AI-powered, automated shrimp farm using biofloc technology. This system allows for the production of up to 1.5 metric tons of shrimp annually per container, with minimal water usage and no need for antibiotics or harmful chemicals.

Atarraya's Shrimpbox technology integrates biotechnology, software, and hardware to create an optimal environment for shrimp growth. The system uses AI-powered software for remote management and monitoring of water quality, temperature, oxygenation, and feeding. This automated approach reduces labor requirements and improves efficiency. The biofloc technology employed in Shrimpbox transforms waste nutrients into feed for the shrimp, creating a closed-loop system that minimizes environmental impact.

As of July 2022, Atarraya had eight operational Shrimpbox units, with plans to expand rapidly. The company conducted its first harvest from its Indianapolis facility in November 2022, demonstrating the viability of its technology. Atarraya's business model involves selling Shrimpbox units to farmers, providing shrimp larvae and feed, and charging a technology royalty based on shrimp production. The company aims to make the Shrimpbox accessible to farmers by manufacturing each unit for approximately USD 25,000.

In addition to its technological innovations, Atarraya has created a brand called Agua Blanca Seafood to market its locally produced shrimp. The company launched an ecommerce website in May 2023 to sell shrimp directly to consumers in the Indianapolis area, offering both delivery and pickup options.
