Argentina-based Bioceres Crop Solutions is an agricultural biotech company that develops crop solutions that make crops climate-resistant and sustainable. The company has three business segments, which are 1) Crop Protection (adjuvants, pest control molecules, and microbial-based pesticides), 2) Crop Nutrition (inoculants, micro-beaded fertilizers and biofertilizers, crop health products, and biostimulants), and 3) Seed & Integrated Products (seed treatments, seed yield traits, and Germplasm), with its crop development primarily focused on wheat and soybean. Bioceres also brings digital solutions to support growers and provide end-to-end traceability for production outputs. The third segment offers seed treatments developed with its HB4 technology.
Bioceres sold its HB4 transgenic wheat seed, offered in four varieties—Bermejo, Paraná, Traful, and Iruya HB4—in Argentina in May 2024 for the first time. The HB4 wheat is drought-resistant and produces ~20% more than conventional seeds during droughts. The wheat includes the HaHB4 gene (introduced from the sunflower, which is activated in conditions of water stress, salinity, darkness, or insect attacks) and resistance to glufosinate from the Streptomyces hygroscopicus gene.
As of 2024, the public limited company has operations in over 40 countries (mainly in Argentina, Brazil, the US, Europe, and South Africa) with over 750 patent applications.
