Moon Surgical is a surgical robotics company that developed the Maestro Robotic System. It's a robotic surgical assistant designed to enhance traditional laparoscopic techniques. The Maestro System comprises two flexible robotic arms that can hold and manipulate laparoscopic cameras, probes, and instruments during soft-tissue surgical procedures.
The key differentiator of the Maestro System is its ability to seamlessly integrate into existing clinical workflows without disrupting the surgeon's conventional laparoscopic techniques or requiring specialized training. It acts as an extension of the surgeon's hands, providing an extra set of arms that can be controlled manually or operated autonomously through computer vision and AI. This system aims to improve operating room efficiency, reduce procedure duration, and enable alternative labor models, ultimately enhancing the surgical experience.
In December 2022, Moon Surgical received FDA clearance for the Maestro System, allowing select high-volume surgical centers in the US to access its capabilities. In June 2024, Moon Surgical received a second FDA clearance for the commercial version of the Maestro System, paving the way for a limited market release in the US and Europe ahead of a broader launch in 2025.
Key customers and partnerships
Moon Surgical primarily offers the Maestro Robotic System to surgical centers. Moon Surgical has collaborated with NVIDIA to integrate the NVIDIA Holoscan Edge computing platform into the Maestro System, enabling real-time AI algorithms for features like the ScoPilot hands-free laparoscope control. As of March 2024, the Maestro System, integrated with NVIDIA Holoscan, has successfully treated over 200 patients across various surgical procedures. Its first clinical use in the US was by three surgeons who practice at Baptist Health hospitals.
