Founded in 1991 by Mark Allin and originally functioning as a traditional publishing company, Capstone offers education solutions, children’s books, interactive e-books, literacy programs, and PebbleGo, a research database for school libraries, classrooms, and at-home reading. The company reports that around 40% of US elementary schools use PebbleGo at the K-2 level. Capstone has strategic partnerships with a number of firms such as DC comics, Tony Hawk Inc., and Amazon Alexa. In 2003, the company launched FactHound.com, which is reportedly the first publisher-provided, internet-based resource for elementary students. In 2017, the company launched Capstone 4D, an augmented reality tool that blends print books with visual technology to create engaging reading experiences.
In September 2021, Capstone acquired Buncee, which offers digital content creation and collaboration tools with over 2,000 templates to students and educators. Targeted at individuals, schools, and districts, Buncee partners with companies such as Google and Microsoft to offer its services in 187 countries. The acquisition allows Capstone to integrate its curriculum-aligned content with Buncee’s creator tools and enable students to create and share content based on their subject materials. It will also allow educators to use creative tools to gain insight into students' subject comprehension and review their growth in a digital environment. The company plans to integrate Buncee with its PebbleGo platform for use in classrooms by early 2022.
