Toledo Solar is an American manufacturer of thin-film cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar panels and solar glass. The company was founded in 2019 and commenced production in 2022 at its manufacturing facility in Perrysburg, Ohio. Toledo Solar's panels are designed for residential and small commercial installations, differentiating its offerings from industry giant First Solar, which primarily serves the utility-scale market.
Toledo Solar's production process involves sourcing its entire supply chain from North America. The company's thin-film CdTe panels are fully recyclable and known for their durability, efficiency, and resilience to shading effects compared to traditional crystalline silicon modules. As of 2022, Toledo Solar operated a 100-megawatt annual production capacity, with plans to quadruple this to 2.8 gigawatts by 2027 to meet surging demand catalyzed by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.
In September 2022, Toledo Solar announced its domestic manufacturing expansion initiative, aiming to create over 250 additional jobs by 2027. The company was also a partner in a consortium that secured USD 20 million in funding from the US Department of Energy to accelerate the development of more affordable and efficient CdTe solar cells. In March 2023, Toledo Solar settled a lawsuit filed by First Solar, alleging the company had rebranded and sold First Solar's panels as its own. Following this, Toledo Solar underwent a management overhaul and strategic shift toward hardened solar panels for harsh environments and semi-transparent solar panels.
