Ocean Rainforest is a seaweed cultivation and processing company based in the Faroe Islands with operations in Europe and California, US. Founded in 2010, the company has developed a proprietary open ocean cultivation system suitable for offshore conditions in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Ocean Rainforest grows various seaweed species including Saccharina latissima, Alaria esculenta, Laminaria digitata, Palmaria palmata, and Macrocystis pyrifera. The company processes seaweed into products for food, feed, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics industries. Ocean Rainforest's seaweed contains beneficial proteins, antioxidants, minerals, essential trace elements, dietary fibers, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The company's cultivation method is considered environmentally sustainable as it requires no arable land, freshwater, or additional fertilizers. Seaweed farming also supports marine biodiversity, mitigates eutrophication, and may provide resilience against localized ocean acidification. In October 2023, Ocean Rainforest secured a USD 4.5 million Technology to Market Plus Up award from the US Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) to advance offshore giant kelp cultivation technologies in California. This will allow the company to operate an 86-acre offshore Macrocystis pyrifera cultivation testbed in the Santa Barbara Channel.
