SWiP offers a facial recognition-based POS terminal and app for users to authenticate in-store and remote payments. Users must download the SWiP app, link their payment cards, and add their facial recognition data through a selfie (which the company terms the “SelfieToPay profile”). Once the account is created users can make payments through facial recognition via SWiP terminals at retail stores. SWiP offers a range of in-store payment methods using facial recognition, including cashier checkout terminals, self-checkout terminals, and vending machines. In addition, it also supports payments through QR codes as well as pre-order and remote payments.
Notably, the terminals comprise liveness technology from VisionLabs, a facial and object recognition technology provider to offer anti-spoofing and determining if the person is real. In addition to authenticating payments, the platform offers value-added services to users such as discounts and cashback, loyalty points, and helping users manage their savings, among others. For merchants, SWiP offers automatic age verification, loyalty program-related solutions, and CRM offerings such as order management systems and marketing mechanics.
The platform has been piloted in restaurants and healthcare facilities in Russia, through partnerships the company entered in 2020. It partnered with Raiffeisenbank Russia in May 2020, to let users pay at five locations of the #FARW burger chain using a Raiffeisenbank card. SWiP noted that the pilot had 4.2% adoption for SelfieToPay by Raiffeisenbank customers, higher than its target 3% adoption. Moreover, the company raised USD 1 million in seed funding in December 2020, led by Mobile TeleSystems OJSC (MTS).
