Co-founded by Chad Swenson, Tanner Swenson, and Lawrence Tran in 2018, Tappity offers a library of entertaining and interactive live-action videos for children aged 4 to 10. Content is based around the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), a set of K-12 science content standards that have been widely adopted across the US. Using proprietary tools to produce interactive, educational video content, Tappity’s library includes more than 200 science lessons delivered through thousands of videos. Although the videos are pre-recorded, they are produced in such a way that children feel they are interacting one-on-one with the character on the screen. Tappity is available to subscribers with some content provided free of charge.
Tappity seeks to set itself apart by focusing on the needs of parents and children rather than catering to local school systems. Besides videos, Tappity provides an in-app points system for completing activities and offers parents follow-up emails to track and encourage learning. In response to the increased screen time among children due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Tappity adapted some of its lessons to include offline activities. As of December 2020, the platform had more than 5,000 paying users and more than 20,000 weekly active users.
In December 2020, the company raised USD 1.3 million in seed funding to expand its team and make its lessons available on the web and its iOS app. The company also plans to expand its content library to host more than 1,000 hours of video content by the end of 2021 and more than 4,000 hours by the end of 2022. Prior to this round, the company raised USD 125,000 in seed funding in August 2020.
