ALT TEX (Alternative Textiles) uses biopolymer technology to extract sugar from food waste to produce fabrics for sustainable textile brands. The Canadian company’s prototype products include yarns and polyester-like fabrics made from banana peels or pineapple leaves. As of October 2024, ALT TEX’s products were not yet commercialized. The company aimed to divert 150,000 tons of food waste and prevent 750 tons of GHG emissions annually.
The company claims that its recycled textiles are biodegradable and carbon neutral. According to ALT TEX, one T-shirt made from its recycled fiber can divert 9 kg of carbon emissions.
