Fieldless Farms

Based in Canada, Fieldless Farms grows pesticide-free leafy greens using renewable energy and technology such as hydroponics, control environment agriculture (CEA), and automation. The company offers two salad mix products made from crispy and sweet lettuce varieties, respectively, and was developing a product made from kale as of July 2022.

As of July 2022,  the company produced leafy greens at its 20,000 sq ft facility located in Cornwall, serving customers upto 2,000 packs of lettuce mixes weekly in Ontario and Quebec. Fieldless Farms also reported that it was planning to expand the capacity of the Cornwall facility, build more facilities in Toronto, Montreal and the West Coast by 2025, and to start growing vegetables such as baby tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. 

The company has outsourced its vertical farming technology by partnering with an unnamed tech company in Canada for the growth system in its Cornwall farm. Fieldless Farm reported that it also hopes to continue to partner with other technology companies for the construction of new facilities and development of new crops in the future. The company states that this strategy allows it to focus on supply chain and increasing product reach.

Key customers and partnerships

In August 2020, Fieldless Farms secured a deal with Canadian produce retailer Farm Boy to supply the company’s lettuce mixes to 16 Farm Boy stores across Cornwall to Kingston. Fieldless Farms extended this deal to supply most of Farm Boy stores, which included stores in the Toronto area. As of July 2022, Fieldless Farms supplied to more than 40 retail stores, which included 38 Farm Boy stores and other Canadian retailers Metro, Your Independent Grocer, and online retailer Burrow Shop.

Funding and financials

In July 2022 , the company raised USD 17.5 million in Series A funding led by Forage Capital Partners, Farm Credit Canada (FCC), and BDC. The funds were expected to support expansion of its Cornwall vertical farming facility and launch new products.
