Chromologics is a Danish spin-out from the Technical University of Denmark that produces natural colors through its fungal fermentation platform. The company offers Natu.Red, a natural red color, to food and beverage manufacturers for use in bakery, dairy, plant-based meat, meat, seafood and poultry, confectionery, beverages, snacks and condiments, soups and sauces, and pet food.
The company ferments fungus with sugar and nutrients in water, filters out the fungus, and turns the liquid into concentrated red powder. As of October 2023, the company was conducting tests in various food applications and had plans to launch in 2025. In February 2023, the company secured a patent from the Technical University of Denmark for its technology to produce natural colors.
The company claims to produce Natu.Red in 10x less space than other natural colorants and uses labs powered by 100% renewable electricity and 40% renewable heat (it was aiming for 100% by 2025).
Key customers and partnerships
In February 2023, Chromologics joined the International Association of Color Manufacturers (IACM) to gain access to industry expertise and resources to further enhance its natural color solutions.
Funding and financials
In March 2023, Chromologics raised EUR 7.1 million (~USD 7.5 million) in an extended seed round to accelerate the commercialization of Natu.Red, following a EUR 6 million (~USD 6.4 million) seed round in May 2021.
