WoodSpoon

Founded in 2019 and commercially launched in March 2020, New York-based WoodSpoon delivers on-demand meals made by home chefs. The online platform builds a community of local professional and hobbyist chefs who are vetted rigorously to meet the state’s regulations and permit requirements prior to onboarding. Meals cooked by the home chefs are packaged and delivered by the company, including customer order aggregation and payments.

As of December 2020, WoodSpoon generated monthly sales of over USD 15,000 with more than 8,000 customers in Manhattan, Jersey City, Brooklyn, Long Island City, and Hoboken, including nationwide shipping of baked goods. Furthermore, as of August 2021, the company onboarded a few chefs from prominent restaurants such as Nobu, The Modern, and Cipriani, having accumulated almost 150 active chefs in total, providing culturally diverse food, who serve more than 16,000 active customers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. The company also reported a 50% month-over-month growth in customers.

In December 2021, WoodSpoon, primarily serving the B2C market entered into the B2B space. It partnered up with an NYC company Carbyne to cater employee lunches and corporate events.

WoodSpoon raised USD 14 million in a Series A funding round in August 2021, led by Restaurant Brands International. The new funds are to be used to expand into new markets over the next year, increase growth via R&D and marketing, double headcount and the number of home chefs on the platform. The company revealed that it plans to launch a new product at the end of August and to revitalize the WoodSpoon app.
