Gen3Bio uses its patented enzyme technology to convert algae used to purify municipal wastewater into specialty bio-based chemicals like biofuels or bioplastics. The technology takes out the sugars, proteins, and fats from the algae and then converts it into specialty chemicals. The extracted nutrients such as the proteins and lipids, are repurposed as agricultural fish food. The company raised USD 40,000 in a pre-seed funding round in the spring of 2020, which was planned to be used to demonstrate its technology at a wastewater treatment facility in Wisconsin. In May 2020, it was reported that recent successes will allow for the scaling of the company’s pilot program in preparation for full-scale commercialization.
