Canada-based Hydrogen In Motion (H2M) has developed a patented nanomaterial for solid-state hydrogen storage. The material selectively attracts hydrogen at ambient temperature and low pressure allowing twice the hydrogen to be stored in the same volume at half the cost. The nanomaterial is also conformable and can be shaped to meet application-specific requirements—from capsule tanks in drones, to hexagonal tanks in vehicles, to larger tankers for grid-scale renewable energy storage.
In addition to hydrogen storage solutions, H2M also offers hydrogen generation and delivery (H2U) services. The company claims that its storage tanks are highly portable, making it possible to create a direct-to-consumer delivery method, that eliminates the need for refueling stations.
Key customers and partnerships
In September 2021, H2M partnered with Loop Energy to convert the Southern Railway of British Columbia’s diesel-electric locomotive to hydrogen-electric. In July 2021, the company partnered with H2e Power (India) to develop a hydrogen fuel cell three-wheeler using an H2e PEM fuel cell and H2M’s solid-state hydrogen storage technology.
Funding and financials
In January 2015, H2M raised an undisclosed amount in a pre-seed funding round.
