Ways2H was formed as a joint venture between Clean Energy Enterprises, a California-based cleantech management company, and Japan Blue Energy Corporation (JBEC), a supplier of biomass hydrogen. Ways2H develops technology to convert waste such as municipal solid waste, medical waste, plastics, and sewage sludge into clean hydrogen fuel. The technology breaks down waste and extracts hydrogen without producing hazardous chemicals or tar.
Ways2H’s product portfolio includes both mobile and stationary solutions, and can be configured in a range of sizes to meet specific needs. Its mobile solution, which fits into three stackable 20-inch containers, can produce 50 kilograms of hydrogen per day from one ton of biomass feedstock. It is equipped with a 40-kilowatt power generator with an integrated fuel cell. Its stationary solutions are scalable from 8–50 tons per day of feedstock processing capacity.
In October 2020, the company announced its intention to complete its first two commercial facilities in California and Japan, with plans to scale globally targeting Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In March 2021, the company announced the completion of its Tokyo facility, which is capable of converting one ton of dried sewage sludge into 40–50 kg of hydrogen per day. Additional facilities are planned in India, Martinique, the UK and Ireland.
Key customers and partnerships
In August 2023, Ways2H partnered with h2e Power Systems, an Indian green hydrogen and fuel cell company, to commercially establish a manufacturing base in Pune, India. In September 2021, the company partnered with VALECOM, a Caribbean energy solutions provider, to convert up to 9,000 tons of waste per year into renewable hydrogen on the island of Martinique. In June 2021, Ways2H partnered with Element 2, which is building the first national network of hydrogen fueling stations in the UK and Ireland, to build facilities to convert waste into hydrogen gas to supply Element 2’s network of hydrogen fueling stations. The partnership plans to roll out up to 40 waste-to-hydrogen refueling stations in the UK, starting in Scotland.
Funding and financials
In October 2020, Way2H raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Pacific6 Enterprises to scale operations, and build its project pipeline.
