LabXchange is a free online platform for science education developed by the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences with support from the founding sponsor, the Amgen Foundation (established by Amgen to advance science education in the US and internationally). LabXchange was created to promote science literacy for all.
Key features of the platform include a) access to a library of credible, curated and free digital content; b) interactive, virtual simulations of experimental designs; c) ability to mix and match resources to create remixed “learning pathways”; d) providing networking opportunities for teachers, learners and contributors within the global scientific community to share research experiences, begin a discussion forum or seek a mentor.
The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic led to the development team’s focus shifting to launching features critical to remote learning particularly for K-12 educators such as further customizing learning pathways. As of April 2020, the platform had over 250,000 users.
In November 2020, Robert Lue, professor of molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University and founder of LabXChange.org and HarvardX, lost his battle with cancer. Until his death, Lue was leading LabXchange as Faculty Director and Principal Investigator.
Funding and financials
In June 2022, the company secured USD 30 million from the Amgen Foundation, to strengthen science-based learning for students and educators globally.
