Karshare was a Bristol-based peer-to-peer car sharing platform that enabled car owners to rent out their vehicles to vetted drivers in their local area. Founded in 2016 by Andy Hibbert, the company aimed to create a world where people never had more cars than needed. Karshare allowed members to list their cars on the website, similar to renting out properties on Airbnb. At its peak, the company had over 40,000 users.
Karshare's technology enabled cars to be unlocked with a mobile phone using facial recognition. The platform provided comprehensive insurance coverage, ID checks, a review system, and 24/7 road assistance. Karshare facilitated over 20,000 rentals since the beginning of 2021. In June 2023, the company ceased operations due to a lack of funds and investor sentiment amidst the cost-of-living crisis, which lowered rental demand.
Karshare's vision was to fundamentally shift the way people perceive car ownership and promote sustainable transportation options. The company believed that through car sharing, they could demonstrate that owning a car is a choice, not a necessity, and contribute to reducing carbon emissions and creating a greener future.
