Senoptica Technologies is a Dublin-based, food waste-combating sensor technology startup that spun out from Trinity College Dublin. As of 2024, it is working on a novel packaging sensor technology to reduce food waste. The Senoptica sensor is made using a patented food-safe ink that is directly printed onto the inside of active food packaging such as modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), vacuum packaging, and vacuum skin packaging. This ink allows the sensor to measure the atmosphere surrounding fresh food in packages, providing real-time feedback on food conditions. Additionally, the food-safe ink can be printed on labels for manual application, enabling real-time oxygen measurement and helping to predict the shelf life of food.
As of 2024, the company claims that once the product has been packed, the sensor is scanned using an in-line scanning system, providing 100% inspection and increasing quality control by 99.95%. Senoptica also claims that it recycles individual failed packs for repacking, resulting in savings for the whole food value chain and a reduction in plastic wastage.
As of 2024, the company successfully produced and tested the technology, and was piloting it with a global retailer and a large European food company. In April 2024, Senoptica received FDA approval, supporting the company’s plan to expand into the US market. Senoptica also announced plans to expand its operations into the UK.
