FutureFeed, established by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), specializes in creating livestock feed additives for cattle. The company leverages the Asparagopsis seaweed for its feed additive solutions, which contain bioactives that disrupt methane production in the stomachs of ruminants like cattle.
FutureFeed holds the global IP for using Asparagopsis seaweed as a livestock feed ingredient, which has proven to reduce ruminant methane emissions by at least 80%. It transforms the seaweed into a freeze-dried powder or an edible oil that can be mixed in with the regular feed in small quantities. Apart from emission reduction, the feed additive also claims to improve feed efficiency and energy conservation in livestock.
Customers and partnerships
The company partners with entities involved in seaweed cultivation, aggregation, and processing to facilitate the global adoption of its feed supplement. As of May 2024, it had licensed its IP to nine Asparagopsis producers and processors globally, including Blue Ocean Barns, Symbrosia, Volta Greentech, and Synergraze.
In March 2023 , the company partnered with GrainCorp, the University of Queensland, and Agriculture Victoria Services to trial low-emission feed supplements.
Funding and financials
As of May 2024, the company had secured USD 29.3 million from various rounds and grants, including Series A funding in August 2020 and a grant from the BNEF Pioneers program in April 2023.
