ICON Esports was formed as a result of the acquisition of Tainted Minds (an Australian esports organization) by a consortium of private investors in February 2019. The organization was rebranded as ICON Esports and relocated its headquarters to Sydney and has offices in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Adelaide. In June 2019, the company acquired The Chiefs Esports Club, which currently fields rosters for Counter-Strike, Rocket League, League of Legends, Street Fighter, and Fortnite competitions.
In November 2021, The Chiefs Esports Club announced a two-year deal with JLINGZ Esports, an esports organization owned by Manchester United player Jesse Lingard, to develop an esports academy, initially focusing on Rainbow Six: Siege, a title in which both companies currently field rosters.
In February 2021, the company raised AUD 2.2 million (approximately USD 1.7 million) from SQID Technologies Limited, an Australian payments services provider, in exchange for a 50% stake in its business. The funding valued ICON at AUD 4.3 million (approximately USD 3.3 million), with the fresh capital set to be allocated to expanding ICON’s sales and business development activities in 2021. The company’s growth strategy will comprise the launch of its ecommerce platform in Q2 2021 and M&A.
