Founded in 2012, Digital Dream Labs (DDL) provides hands-on educational technology through video games and computer robots to promote science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) learning among children aged four to nine.
DDL acquired the intellectual property rights to the Vector, Cozmo, and Overdrive robots from robotics company Anki after it filed for bankruptcy in 2020. DDL launched a Kickstarter campaign in March 2020 to relaunch the Vector and Cozmo artificial intelligence-powered companion robots in 2020, but this was delayed. In March 2021, DDL announced plans to relaunch Vector and Cozmo internationally in time for the 2021 holiday season using Protempo, a global distributor of consumer electronics. The former developer, Anki, had already sold hundreds of thousands of units globally prior to its acquisition. While Anki sought to give the robots a distinct personality, DDL is making the Vector robot open-source, while Cozmo will be programmable through the company’s Code Lab app.
Funding and financials
In April 2022, the company raised USD 2 million in a funding round led by iNetworks. It planned to use the funds to expand operations, especially the potential of manufacturing its products in the US.
