UK-based Biohm manufactures bio-based material used in construction from raw materials including mushrooms, orange peel, cocoa husks and other food waste. Biohm claims to have manufactured the world’s first insulation panel from mycelium (mushroom root structure) and a semi-structural construction panel from food waste.
Biohm also produces Orb ( organic refused bio-compound), a material manufactured from the recycling of products that are generally considered difficult-to-recycle. Orb is used to create replacements for wood-based sheet material used in the construction sector for dry lining, wainscoting, and interior structures.
In July 2020 Biohm announced that it will commence production at its Somerset facility in September 2020 and will initially supply 20 homes a month with plans to gradually increase that figure to 120. The company also plans to open a second site in Newcastle in 2021.
