Founded in 1998, IXL Learning provides online educational content for students in all grades in math, English language arts, science, and social studies. Its products include IXL, its flagship personalized learning platform; ABCya!, (launched in 2004 and acquired by IXL Learning in 2018) a provider of educational computer games and apps for children; Quia Web for teachers, a program for creating educational games, quizzes, surveys, and web pages; Quia Books, an online platform for world-language courses; Education.com, an online learning resource for teachers and parents acquired in 2019; Vocabulary.com, a platform for improving literacy through vocabulary building acquired in 2020; Mathletics, Readiwriter Spelling, and Reading Eggs following its acquisition of Australia-based 3P Learning in 2020; and Wyzant, an online tutoring marketplace acquired in 2021. As of March 2021, the IXL Learning platform was used by more than 12 million students.
In February 2021, the company announced the acquisition of Wyzant, an online tutoring marketplace, allowing the company to expand its personalized mentoring service. A month later, IXL Learning acquired Rosetta Stone from the EdTech company Cambium Learning Group. Rosetta Stone has sold popular language learning software since 1992, now for around 30 languages. As Rosetta Stone moved deeper into EdTech through acquisitions and new product launches, it was acquired by Cambium Learning Group in August 2020. As of 2019, Rosetta Stone was used in 17,000 US schools and reported 516,000 subscribers. In June 2022, the company acquired language learning software developer Curiosity Media, to strengthen IXL Learning’s suite and boost Curiosity Media's growth plans. In September 2022, the firm acquired Emmersion, a provider of AI-driven language assessments, to deepen its range of language and literacy products. In March 2023, the company acquired Teachers Pay Teachers, an online marketplace catering to community PreK-12 teachers, to broaden the company's capability to provide teachers with appropriate and stimulating learning materials for PK-12 students. In April 2024 , IXL Learning acquired Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com to create a more engaging and accessible learning experience. In August 2024, IXL Learning acquired Carson Dellosa Education, a publisher of teaching supplies, to expand its portfolio of educational resources.
Key customers and partnerships
In November 2020, 3P Learning partnered with NWEA, a US-based not-for-profit that creates assessment solutions for K-12 students, to connect 3P Learning’s mathematics curriculum with NWEA assessments to improve learning outcomes. Under the partnership, 3P Learning’s flagship math curriculum product Mathletics will be combined with NWEA’s MAP Growth assessment solution.
Since January 2021, IXL offers an integration with Canvas, a learning management system (LMS). The integration allows a single sign-in to Canvas and IXL’s curriculum, the assignment of IXL coursework and assessments from within Canvas, and roster matching between the two platforms. In April 2021, the company integrated its IXL learning platform with Schoology, a learning management system (LMS) offered by PowerSchool, a provider of K-12 educational technology (EdTech) solutions. The integration offers a Quick Launcher that provides educators with one-click access to the IXL curriculum, analytics, assessments (“Real-Time Diagnostic”), and teacher resources through Schoology. Roster matching between the two platforms allows for easier class setup and management.
