Sublime Systems has developed a novel electrochemical process to produce low-carbon cement that eliminates CO2 emissions from traditional cement manufacturing. The company's technology operates at ambient temperature, eliminating the need for fossil fuel-powered kilns that typically heat materials to 1,500°C. Sublime's process uses alternative calcium sources and carbon-free raw materials, combined with clean electricity to produce cement.
Sublime Systems operates a pilot facility in Somerville, Massachusetts, with a production capacity of 250 tons per year. In May 2024, the company achieved its first commercial application when its cement was used in the floor and sidewalk of One Boston Wharf Road, Boston's largest net-zero commercial office park. The company is developing its first commercial manufacturing facility in Holyoke, Massachusetts, scheduled to begin operations in 2026, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons. Plans are underway to scale up to a full-scale facility capable of producing 1 million tons annually by 2030.
