Deutsche Lufthansa (FRA: LHA) is a German aviation company founded in 1953. Lufthansa was the second-largest airline in Europe based on passenger traffic in 2023. The company is one of the five founding members of Star Alliance , the world’s largest airline alliance formed in 1997, and the first European airline to receive the Skytrax 5-star certification. Lufthansa generated revenue of EUR 3.8 billion (~USD 4 billion) in 2023.
The company operates Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines, as well as the German low-cost carrier Eurowings. Lufthansa’s logistics solutions include air freight container management services, Jettainer Group (a subsidiary that specializes in urgent shipments), and AeroLogic (a cargo airline). The company also provides maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services for airline operators.
Europe is Lufthansa’s largest market (~64% of total revenue in 2023), followed by North America (~20%). Lufthansa projects that in 2023, its passenger airline capacity will be between 85% and 90% of what it was before the pandemic and expects its adjusted EBIT to reach ~8% by 2024. The company also planned to introduce six new routes from Munich to Frankfurt by the summer of 2023. Lufthansa expects its CO2 emissions to be halved by 2030 (compared with 2019) and to reach net zero status by 2050.
