Shellworks

Shellworks is a UK-based startup that creates bio-based packaging solutions as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Shellworks uses its Vivomer biomaterial to produce jars and tubs in various sizes, a single-size fragrance cap in addition to custom packaging solutions based on client requirements. Vivomer is created using a proprietary microbial fermentation process based on microbes found in marine and soil environments. The granules that result from the fermentation process are turned into pellets and mixed with natural pigments to create custom colors. Vivomer pellets are also compatible with existing manufacturing techniques including injection molding and extrusion, enabling it to be used in mass-manufacturing applications. 

The company claims Vivomer is 100% vegan, skincare-compatible, and free from microplastics. Additionally, while plastic packaging made from Vivomer is chemically stable and re-usable, it is able to break down in any waste stream as the process is activated by microbes. The company claims this allows Vivomer to be fully home-compostable in 52 weeks and involves extremely low or no emissions of toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when subjected to incineration.

Shellworks previously developed and marketed “Shellmer,” a bio-based plastic created using biopolymer Chitosan, which is extracted from chitin that is found in the shells of crustaceans. It has since been discontinued following Vivomer’s introduction.

Key customers and partnerships:

In 2021, the company partnered with natural beauty brand Haeckels to replace the amber glass packaging it was using with Vivomer-based packaging across its entire skincare line. 

Funding and financials:

In May 2022, the company raised USD 6.2 million in a seed round led by LocalGlobe, with participation from Founder Collective, True Global, BoxGroup, Divergent Capital, and additional angel investors. The funds were earmarked to scale the company’s technology and support its commercial growth.
