Based in Italy, Frumat develops a leather material from the skin and core waste from food industry apples. Its materials consist of 50% apple and 50% polyurethane and its products include apple cards (paper for stationery and packaging) and apple skins (used in fashion, furniture, and manufacturing industries).
The pulp left over from the apple-juice making process is dried and ground into powder and mixed with pigments and a binding chemical to produce a mixture; which is then dehydrated and combined with polyurethane, to create the flexible leather material. The apple skin manufacturing process is patented by the company.
In March 2020, Tommy Hilfiger launched two sneaker models made using apple peel fibers in partnership with Frumat. Several other fashion brands including Caval, Happy Genie, Veerah, Womsh, Luxtra London have used Frumat apple leather in their handbags, sneakers, and wallets.
