Founded in 1995, Dictionary.com provides English language learning support to students, teachers, and others. Its flagship, eponymous online dictionary provides definitions, word origins, and other features, while Dictionary Academy offers virtual tutoring, educational word lists and flashcards, and word games. Thesaurus.com, meanwhile, provides lists of synonyms and antonyms, and grammar advice, and Grammar Coach supports essay, email, or school paper writing. Dictionary.com’s proprietary source is the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, which it acquired in 2004. In 2018, Rock Holdings, an investor in FinTech and other online enterprises, acquired the company from IAC, a holding company with investments in media and internet companies, which added Dictionary.com to its portfolio in 2008. As of October 2021, the platform recorded more than 70 million monthly users and 5.5 billion word searches annually.
In October 2021, the company entered the corporate learning space through the acquisition of Skillo, provider of a learning management system (LMS) that allows organizations to build dynamic online training courses and provides reporting tools that help measure training effectiveness. The acquisition allows Dictionary.com to broaden its offerings for existing users and offer more tools for education and corporate learning. Following the acquisition, educators can use, create, and share educational materials such as interactive lesson plans, activities, and templates for online and in-person learning.
