Fortera is a materials technology company developing low-carbon cement solutions. The company's core product, ReAct cement, is produced through its proprietary ReCarb process which captures CO2 emissions from traditional cement production and mineralizes it into calcium carbonate. This process reduces carbon emissions by 70% compared to ordinary Portland cement production. The ReCarb technology integrates with existing cement manufacturing infrastructure as a bolt-on solution, operating at lower kiln temperatures while using standard feedstocks and equipment. The company's technology is backed by over 100,000 hours of research and development and more than 100 patents developed over a decade of product testing. In April 2024, Fortera opened its first commercial ReCarb plant in Redding, California, adjacent to CalPortland's cement facility. The Redding plant has the capacity to capture 6,600 tons of CO2 annually and produce 15,000 tons of ReAct cement. The ReAct cement matches the strength and durability of ordinary cement and is ASTM-approved as a cement substitute. It can be used independently or blended with traditional cement.
Key customers and partnerships
In March 2021, Fortera established a partnership with Lehigh Hanson (now CalPortland) to collaborate on the low-carbon cement plant project in Redding, California. In May 2023, the company joined the Alliance for Low Carbon Cement and Concrete (ALCCC) to support cement sector decarbonization efforts. The company was selected as one of the most promising low-carbon cement technologies by the Global Cement and Concrete Association in 2022.
