Based in Peru, Le Qara develops an alternative leather material from microorganisms. The process involves feeding microorganisms with plants and fruit residue. The benefit of the leather material is that it can be engineered into different textures, thicknesses, and levels of flexibility. As of March 2020, the company had applied for a patent for its bioleather technology and plans to commence commercial-scale production by July 2022.
The bioleather material, mainly used in the fashion industry, has been used in prototype products such as bags.
