AgGene Inc. is a biotech company focused on developing enhanced plant traits using its proprietary P3 technology (Plant Protein Push) and CRISPR to enhance protein content in crops. The company shifted its focus from canola to crops like rice and chickpeas, aligning with the growing demand for higher protein in pulses.
AgGene planned to initiate CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing by 2023 to control regulatory genes for increased protein in a portfolio of global crops and commence field trials in 2025. As of 2024, the company was developing gene-edited varieties of rice, peas, chickpeas, and canola as well as pod shatter-resistant traits for canola to reduce crop loss during harvesting. Early results in the company’s rice project in October 2023 showed protein increases of up to 55%. AgGene was also working on identifying gene targets involved in abiotic stress response, particularly for drought stress mitigation.
