Canada-based CarbonX provides carbon footprint measurement and offsetting solutions for businesses. The Canadian company’s patented software, Zerofootprint, calculates greenhouse gas emissions of a specific product line, device, service, or investment. Businesses can then choose to offset these emissions by purchasing certified carbon offsets via CarbonX. The platform also offers a live feed of the transactions for stakeholders to validate a business’s carbon-neutral claims.
CarbonX had initially planned to offer carbon offsets for businesses via cryptocurrency tokens. In June 2018, CarbonX merged with Zerofootprint, which had developed a patented carbon measurement software. Since then, CarbonX seems to have drifted away from its original cryptocurrency-based business model. Nevertheless, as of May 2021, the company is in the process of developing CarbonXHub, a blockchain-based platform to capture emissions data from IoT devices, manage, and commoditize them.
In May 2021, CarbonX partnered with Ninepoint, a Canadian alternative investment management firm, to measure and offset the carbon emissions from Ninepoint’s Bitcoin ETF.
