Heru is an AI-based wearable vision diagnostics startup that creates vision augmentation software to correct patients' vision defects in real-time. The company’s cloud-based platform integrates with the device to generate the test results.
It allows physicians to conduct nine vision exams, including visual fields, dark adaptation, contrast sensitivity, and color vision testing, using off-the-shelf augmented reality and virtual reality headsets such as Microsoft and Magic Leap Services.
Heru was founded in 2018 as a spinout of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. As of May 2024, the company had over 50 US and international patents, and the platform had examined over 300,000 patient eyes since its commercial launch. Heru’s diagnostics software was registered with the FDA in December 2020.
Funding and financials
In May 2021, Heru concluded a Series A funding round that brought the total funds raised to USD 32.7 million. The company used the proceeds to develop its technology platform and add new features to the program.
