Based in Finland, Nordic Bioproducts Group is a spin-off from Aalto University that develops bio-based products using cellulose. The company uses the proprietary AaltoCell technology to recycle cellulose-containing waste materials such as forest industry byproducts, textile waste, and ordinary paper pulp to produce microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) at an industrial scale. MCC can be used to produce different products such as bio barriers (barrier solutions for food and beverage packaging), biocomposites, emulsions, and paints and coatings. The company claims that AaltoCell technology uses 85% less water, 80% less energy, 98% fewer chemicals, and has a 91% lower carbon footprint compared with traditional methods.
In January 2022, the company successfully launched a cellulose-based textile fiber called “Norratex.” Norratex is made by hydrolyzing cellulose and then further processing it into a viscose-like textile fiber. The company also announced its collaboration with CMPC Ventures, the venture arm of a Chilean pulp, paper, and tissue manufacturer CMPC, for the development and commercialization of Norratex fiber.
