UK-based Biophilica develops the vegan leather material “Treekind” from green waste, such as leaves and twigs collected from parks and gardens. The material is fully recyclable and biodegradable and does not contain petroleum-based polymers. Treekind is still in the research and development stage and is expected to be used across the fashion, furniture, and automotive industries. The company claims that the UK's annual volume of 6 million tons of green waste could be converted into 3.4 million sq. yds. of Treekind material annually.
In September 2020, the company launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to produce the first 545 yards of Treekind material, raising GBP 10,000 (USD 14,200) in the process.
