Based in Brazil, Nova Kaeru develops a vegan leather material named beLEAF, made from the large leaves of the Elephant Ear plant. The company claims that the bio-leather can be produced in a range of colors and textures and can be used in clothing, footwear, accessories, and furniture.
In 2019, the beLEAF material was used in Nike footwear. In addition, the material was also used to create furniture by designers Rodrigo Brenner and Maurício Noronha during the same year. In 2020, Brazilian designer João Maraschin launched beLEAF at London’s Fashion Week. Furthermore, the company claims that it is working with brands such as Prada, Hermès, Gucci, and New Balance.
In addition to beLEAF, the company has also developed a fish leather material from fish industry waste. Nova Kaeru’s Pirarucu fish skin can be used in footwear, handbags, apparel, and upholstery. The vegan leather material and picaru skin are processed using Nova Kaeru’s proprietary organic tanning method, LIVE (Low Input Vast Effect), free of heavy metals.
As of May 2021, the company was exporting its products to more than 30 countries, with distribution through warehouses across the US, Europe, and Asia.
