Andfjord Salmon is a Norwegian land-based salmon farming company that has developed an innovative flow-through technology for sustainable aquaculture. The company's primary facility is located at Kvalnes on the island of Andøya in the Arctic Archipelago of Vesterålen, Norway. Andfjord Salmon's technology utilizes a closed flow-through system that draws clean saltwater directly from the sea, requiring minimal additional power. This approach aims to create an environment as close as possible to the salmon's natural habitat in the ocean.
The company's first production cycle, completed in July 2023, demonstrated the effectiveness of its technology with a high survival rate of 97.5% and a superior share of 91.1%. The total biomass harvested reached 646 tonnes, equivalent to approximately 530 tonnes head-on-gutted (HOG), with an average weight of 3.4 kilograms per fish. This initial harvest generated revenues of NOK 37.1 million.
Andfjord Salmon's expansion plans include gradually increasing its production capacity at Kvalnes to 40,000 tonnes HOG between 2025 and 2030, with an initial target of 8,000 tonnes HOG by 2025. The company is also developing two additional locations, Breivik and Fiskenes, with a long-term ambition to achieve a total production volume of 90,000 tonnes across all three sites.
The company's focus on sustainability extends to its construction process, where excavated materials from pool pits and waterways are used to develop harbor areas, reducing both operating costs and CO2 emissions. Andfjord Salmon also produces its own feed, Calanus Plus, made from natural plankton and other healthy ingredients, which contributes to the quality of its salmon.
