Founded by Emmanuel Freund, Arnaud Lamy, and Yann Carron de la Carrière, Paris-based PowerZ aims to build an education-focused game as engaging as Minecraft or Fortnite for children aged 6 to 12. The game teleports players into a fantasy world of dragons and magic spells. In February 2021, the company launched the first version of its game on computers, considered the “first chapter,” which was used by 15,000 children. In July 2021, PowerZ raised EUR 7 million (USD 8.3 million) in funding. This comprised equity and debt funding of EUR 6 million and EUR 1 million, respectively. The company’s previous funding came from a EUR 3 million (USD 3.5 million) seed round in September 2020. The funds will be used to add new content, expand to other platforms, and launch new languages. The company plans to partner with third-party game studios to introduce new content, with initial contributors including Zero Games, Opal Games, and ArkRep. The new “chapters” will cover mental calculation, geometry, vocabulary, foreign languages, sign language, astronomy, photography, architecture, sculpture, cooking, wildlife, and yoga. With regard to platforms, PowerZ is launching its game on the iPad in July 2021, with the iPhone soon to follow. The company hopes to release the game on the Nintendo Switch and other game consoles in 2022. In terms of languages, the company plans to launch the game in English in addition to its current French version. The company also plans to monetize the game, which is currently free, by offering in-app purchases for visual items.
