Qorium, a company based in the Netherlands, plans to develop and market cell-cultured collagen-based leather. The company claims that the manufacturing process of the material consumes 99% less water and 66% less energy compared to conventional cow leather manufacturing. It also omits the first two phases of the leather tanning process which reportedly causes significant pollution. Qorium has released a prototype of the bio-leather material which can be used by brands that operate in luxury leather goods, automotive, and premium footwear industries.
Funding and financials
In January 2024 , Qorium secured an undisclosed investment from Brightlands Venture Partners and Sofinnova Partners for advanced cell-cultured leather production. Previously, in July 2021, the company raised EUR 2.6 million (USD 3.1 million) in a funding round led by Brightland Venture partners and an undisclosed biotech investor to expand R&D to scale up its cell-culture technology, and to produce large sheets of cultivated leather from bovine skin cells.
