Founded in 2008 by David Ciulla, ReadWorks is a non-profit organization offering online reading comprehension content to over 17 million students and 1.2 million teachers in all 50 US states. The company partners with schools to provide cognitive science research-based instructional materials and tools designed for use in K-12 classrooms. This includes over 4,600 K-12 reading passages written by experts, question sets, step reads, complete lesson plans with guided practice, and a comprehensive ebook library. The company reports that ReadWorks is used in 88% of all public and charter K–8 schools, and has a reach of over 360,000 students in 97% of all public K–12 schools in New York City, the Foundation's target region.
Key customers and partnerships
In September 2021, the company collaborated with Microsoft for the Microsoft Teams Reading Progress tool to provide high-quality texts from its online library to enable teachers to monitor students' reading in Teams. ReadWorks renewed its partnership with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) in December 2021, allowing the NFWF to create original content and share information on conservation.
Funding and financials
In August 2021, the company secured a two-year grant worth USD 150,000 from the Cleveland H. Dodge Foundation to expand the number of texts offered on its online library with a special focus on fiction. This comes in response to a longstanding request from educators on the platform to expand the fiction offering available to readers.
