Triton Algae Innovations is a spinout from UC San Diego research and produces algae-based ingredients.
The company has developed an IP-protected, fermentation scale-up manufacturing process to produce single-cell green algae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii) at an industrial scale. Chlamydomonas has received Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) from the FDA and is used to produce Triton’s Hardtii Alt-Meat ingredient which contains heme pathway compounds that can be used to provide an authentic look and taste to alternative meat and seafood.
Key customers and partnerships
In September 2021, the company partnered with Tofurky, a leading producer of plant-based meats in the US, to develop and launch new algae-based meat products.
