Electrochaea is a German energy technology company specializing in power-to-gas (P2G) technology.
The company’s proprietary biological methanation process leverages archaea, microorganisms found in extreme environments, to produce BioCat Methane, a low-carbon intensity synthetic methane. Excess electricity, typically generated from wind, solar, or other renewable sources, are used to create green hydrogen through electrolysis, which is then combined with CO2 along with archaea resulting in renewable natural gas.
Electrochaea has operated pilot plants in Switzerland, Denmark, and the US, and maintains subsidiary offices in both Denmark and the US.
Key customers and partnerships
Electrochaea collaborates with a wide range of energy companies to produce and deploy over 15 billion cubic feet per year of renewable synthetic natural gas by 2025.
Funding and financials
Electrochaea’s latest funding was in January 2022, when it raised EUR 36 million (~USD 38 million) in a Series D funding round led by Baker Hughes, with participation from Storengy, Energie 360, FocusFirst, and others.
