Algaeing, also known as Algalife, is an Israel-based startup that specializes in using algae to manufacture fibers and dyeing fabrics. According to the company, its patented algae-powered technology provides a triple-positive impact on the planet: 1) Prevents global water pollution; 2) operates in a carbon-negative manner with zero waste; and 3) is free from harmful chemicals and fertilizers. Its fiber and dye are also stated to be 100% biodegradable. Its unique formulation serves as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional clothing dyes derived from coal tar and petroleum.
Algaeing operates as a raw material platform, supplying bulk quantities of ink, dye, and fibers to brands and manufacturers without requiring any process changes. Algaeing harnesses the diverse range of colors produced by different algae species, enabling it to create blue and green dyes, and as of May 2023, it is developing additional colors like orange, brown, and skin tones. By combining its formulation with cellulose or plant fibers, Algaeing also enables the production of algae-based textiles. The company has already introduced "second skin" garments, such as underwear, athleisure wear, and t-shirts.
Key customers and partnerships
It sources raw materials from Algatech, an Israeli company growing algae in seawater using solar-powered vertical farms. Additionally, it has expanded its presence in the pharmaceutical and hygiene sectors through a partnership with Israel-based nonwoven fabrics producer Avgol and is focusing on absorbent hygiene products like wipes, diapers, and women's hygiene products.
Funding and financials
In 2018, the company secured a grant of EUR 150,000 (~USD 160,000) from the H&M foundation to scale its operation. In 2019, the company also raised an undisclosed amount in seed funding from The Mills Fabrica.
