Uppbeat is a music resource sharing platform for creators, such as YouTubers, streamers, and podcasters, to choose the music of their preference to be added to their video and audio productions. As of March 2022, the platform has over 500,000 users.
The platform states that creators will not face copyright claims for using its music and seeks to compensate artists fairly while clearing copyright claims.
Uppbeat uses the Freemium model, where 1) the free version allows access to 50% of the music catalog with 10 track downloads per month, and 2) the paid version, priced at GBP 6.99 (approximately USD 9.60) per month, allows full catalog access with unlimited downloads. To clear copyright claims, free users need only add an Uppbeat credit to their YouTube video description, while paid users will not be required to fulfill this step, having been added to an approved list. Premium subscription revenue (and from advertising in the future) is divided monthly among artists depending on the number of downloads the artist receives. As such, the artist gains income from both free and paid users.
The platform launched in January 2021 and was also experimenting with a referral program as well as a profit-sharing plan. The latter targets YouTubers who bring Uppbeat new customers, allowing them to take the total revenue from those customers for the first two years.
The company raised GBP 4.6 (approx. USD 6.15 million) in Series A funding, in March 2022, with plans to expand its offering to new forms of audio and visual assets, and add new community features to help creators curate and share their playlists.
