Renewables: Next-gen bioenergy and sustainable fuels
?

Alder Fuels (formerly Alder Renewables) has developed a proprietary technology that produces sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) through an advanced pyrolysis process that converts biomass from agricultural residues, sustainably sourced wood waste products, and purpose-grown energy crops into refinery-ready biocrude oil.

The company's technology involves fractionating fast pyrolysis oil into carbon-negative Alder Renewable Crude (ARC), which can be further processed into renewable fuels and chemicals. Alder is also exploring the use of miscanthus as a feedstock to produce renewable transportation fuels including Alder SAF100. The company claims that SAF produced from miscanthus Alder Renewable Crude (ARC) can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 110% compared with conventional fossil jet fuel.

Key customers and partnerships

In September 2021, United Airlines Ventures committed to purchase 1.5 billion gallons of SAF from Alder over 20 years. In June 2022, Avfuel also committed to purchase 1 billion gallons of SAF over 20 years. During the same month, Alder partnered with Boeing to support testing and qualification of Alder Fuels' SAF on its airplanes.

For the development of Alder’s SAF using miscanthus, the company partnered with Idaho National Lab’s Biomass Feedstock National User Facility to preprocess the harvest. BTG Bioliquids, a commercial fast pyrolysis technology provider, then carried out fast pyrolysis in their pilot plant. Following this, Honeywell refined the ARC into liquid hydrocarbon fuels. Finally, the SAF fuel property testing was completed by Washington State University (WSU).

Furthermore, the company's technology has been trialed and tested at the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), with support from the US Defense and Logistics Agency.

Funding and financials

Alder’s latest funding was in January 2023, when the company was awarded USD 2 million by the US Department of Energy to complete the engineering design work to establish the first Alder Fuel demonstration facility. The facility is expected to process 120 dry tons of forest residuals per day and produce 3 million gallons of liquid hydrocarbon biofuel annually, of which 2 million gallons are to be SAF.
