Xata

Xata offers a low-code platform that allows developers to build databases via a spreadsheet-like user interface (UI), without having to manage the underlying infrastructure. The platform turns the database created into an application programming interface (API), so developers can query and update it through their serverless apps. The databases run on a global edge network via multiple data centers, thereby improving response times and minimizing redundancy.

Xata primarily caters to apps and websites that use “Jamstack” architecture, a standard architecture to develop and deploy websites at scale. Accordingly, the platform integrates with Jamstack hosting platforms such as Netlify, Vercel, and Cloudflare Pages. In addition to the Jamstack platforms, Xata also integrates with serverless function platforms such as AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, and Google Cloud Functions, as well as content delivery networks such as Fastly.

Xata distinguishes itself from typical database platforms by allowing its users to interact with the data (viewing, filtering, and sorting data, etc.) through the web browser. Moreover, the platform also provides analytics and insights related to the database, such as active users over time, top paying customers, and number of products in each category, among others.

In March 2022, Xata, a provider of serverless database solutions, raised USD 30 million in Series A funding led by Redpoint Ventures and Index Ventures to use the funding to publicly launch its platform through a freemium subscription-based model. The company began onboarding beta users in mid-February, with the first batch of testers being nonprofits such as Tupu.io and startups that haven’t yet built out their own developer databases. Additionally, it noted that around 1,200 others are signed up for the waitlist.
