ARC Marine is a British company that designs, manufactures, and monitors subsea protection structures. It has developed “Marine Crete,” a patented concrete equivalent construction material that is 98% recycled, non-toxic, plastic-free, and the building block for ARC Marine’s other products. Marine Crete can be left indefinitely in waters to become part of the ecosystem, containing specific pH and surface textures to maximize marine flora and fauna settlement.
Using Marine Crete, ARC Marine developed three products. 1) “Reef Cubes,” which is designed to support and protect marine ecosystems on the seabed and coastlines. With two global utility patents, this carbon-neutral, plastic-free solution can be used in aquaculture, coastal defense, reef conservation, eco-engineering, and subsea protection. Reef Cubes are claimed to be the only carbon-neutral, plastic-free solution for marine habitat restoration globally, reducing the carbon footprint by 90%.
2) “Marine Matts” starting at a size of 6 x 3 m and density of 2,100–2,300 kg per cubic meter are designed for subsea protection, including scour prevention and sediment stabilization, and can be used in foundations, piles, or revetments in marine operation.
3) “Marine Armor,” which acts as support, barriers, or foundations and can be used in coastal defense, subsea protection, and aquaculture.
As of August 2023, ARC Marine is in the pilot production stage and has deployed over 100–500 mm units as of April 2020. The company also has pilot projects relating to aquaculture and offshore wind. Manufacturing for pilot projects is carried out at the company’s Exeter (UK) site, as it planned to expand to a second site in Scotland as demand increases. For international projects, ARC Marine planned to manufacture its products on-site using sustainably sourced, local materials.
