Jedsy is a Swiss startup specializing in advanced drone delivery technology for the healthcare sector. Founded in early 2021 by aerospace engineer Herbert Weirather and aerobatic helicopter champion Mirko Cesena, Jedsy focuses on rapid and efficient transportation of medical samples, supplies, and laboratory results. The company's core product is the Jedsy X, an innovative fixed-wing drone with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. This drone boasts a flight range of up to 120 kilometers and can operate for up to 75 minutes on a single battery charge. The Jedsy X features a revolutionary digital parachute system and is equipped with five situational awareness sensors for autonomous operation.
A key innovation in Jedsy's technology is its unique "Mailbox" docking station, which can be installed on windows or balconies of buildings. This allows the drone to dock directly for loading, unloading, and recharging, eliminating the need for ground facilities and significantly reducing delivery times. The system is designed to work in various weather conditions and can operate in winds up to 50 km/h. Jedsy's drones are capable of transporting a payload of up to five pounds, with the transport container maintaining a temperature of +/-2° C per hour for sensitive medical samples.
Jedsy has been actively expanding its operations, with a presence in Switzerland, Germany, and Malawi. In Malawi, the company has been working with the Ministry of Health, transporting samples and medical supplies between healthcare facilities. As of December 2022, Jedsy had performed over 5,000 flights in the country as part of the UNICEF drone corridor initiative.
Key customers and partnerships
Jedsy has established significant partnerships within the healthcare sector. In Switzerland, the company collaborates with the Dr. Risch Group, a laboratory medical diagnostics provider with 24 locations across Switzerland and Liechtenstein. As of March 2024, Jedsy was operating about 20 daily flights between two Risch facilities, reducing delivery times from 10 minutes by road to just five minutes by drone.
In Germany, Jedsy entered into a multi-million dollar contract with Asklepios Kliniken in October 2023. This partnership aims to connect Asklepios's Medilys division of analysis and diagnostic labs with group facilities, potentially linking many of Asklepios's nearly 170 healthcare operations across Germany. As of May 2024, Jedsy had agreements for 190 routes across Europe, with its first route in Germany in collaboration with Asklepios.
Additionally, Jedsy has partnered with the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS) to provide insurance and support for its drone deliveries. Under this agreement, TCS patrols will ensure the safety of drone deliveries in the event of unplanned landings, collecting the drones and transporting deliveries to their recipients.
